A frame is an essential component to the presentation and protection of many works of art and artifacts. Artist-designed and period frames are often as valuable as the artwork they surround. To enhance the work, the frame must be historically and aesthetically appropriate. Preservation framing techniques, incorporated with a structurally sound frame, will prevent needless damage to the object. West Lake Conservators has been repairing and conserving period frames since 1975.

Frame Conservation
We address structural ans aesthetic considerations by repairing broken moldings, replacing lost ornamentation, and preserving original finishes. Infilling and intoning is done with reversible, non-tarnishing materials to match the antique character of the original finish as closely as possible. Overpaint and earlier poorer repairs can be removed to reveal original gilt finishes.

Preservation Framing
A well-fitting, structurally sound frame combined with archival, non-reactive materials and preservation mounting techniques will protect and ensure the longevity of the artwork. For works of art on paper, conservation framing prevents unnecessary damage and becomes an important preservation package to safeguard the artwork well into the future. The creation of a 'mico-climate' within a framing system can protect vulnerable art and artifacts from the effects of a harsh environment.
