A NEW ERA ON OWASCO LAKE: WEST LAKE ART CONSERVATION CENTER REOPENS IN EXPANDED FACILITY AS IT CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF PRESERVING CULTURAL HERITAGE

After five decades of safeguarding cultural treasures in Central New York, the West Lake Art Conservation Center (WLACC) has officially reopened in a dramatically expanded facility on the shores of Owasco Lake. This landmark move marks the beginning of a bold new chapter for the nonprofit as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Founded in 1975, WLACC has long served as a trusted partner to museums, universities, and private collectors across the Northeast—offering expert conservation for paintings, murals, frames, paper, objects, and photographs. The new 13,500-square-foot center brings state-of-the-art conservation labs together with dedicated space for exhibitions, workshops, and educational initiatives that invite the public into the world of cultural preservation.

“This is more than a move—it’s a transformation,” said Joey Foster Ellis, Executive Director. “We’re expanding what conservation means, not just behind the scenes, but out in the open. We want people to witness the care, science, and reverence involved in preserving cultural memory.”

The new Owasco Lake location reflects WLACC’s growing mission: to become not only a premier conservation lab, but also a regional hub for education, collaboration, and cultural stewardship. In addition to resuming conservation services, the Center will soon launch a new slate of public programs and welcomes tour requests by appointment.

“Our 50th anniversary is the perfect moment to open our doors wider—to the public, to future collaborators, and to the next generation of conservators,” Ellis added. “We’re inviting the community to see the past more clearly—and help shape how it’s carried forward.”
